1An Unheard Message (2008) Audio available on CD only. Composed, performed, and recorded by Rose Bolton. I wrote An Unheard Message to be included in Echoes of Polyhmnia, a compilation CD of women ambient creators, on the Portland, Oregon-based Hypnos label. I combined the sounds of vintage acoustic piano with recorded de-tuned string instruments, sounds of stones, objects, as well as electronic sounds. A secret message can be heard in the sound of a pencil writing on a surface, and although the message is now forgotten, somehow it is still trapped within the piece. —Rose Bolton © 2008 Rose Bolton -
2Very Near the Flat Edge of the Earth (Excerpt, 2007) Audio available on CD only. Composed by Rose Bolton. Performed by Pemi Paull, viola; Pepi Pilibossian, piano. Very Near the Edge of the Flat Earth is inspired by memories of being a teen and being drawn to the ecstasy and passion of Romantic music. I aimed to write a work that could, in a similar way, appeal to a young person through its emotional nature. The piano part is spare, and the viola part forms the core so that a student can experience the essence of the work, even if they have limited access to an accompanist. 3Nanook of the North (Excerpt, 2012) Composed by Tanya Tagaq and Derek Charke. Soundscape composed by Derek Charke and performed by Tanya Tagaq, voice; and Derek Charke, electronics. This soundscape is from Nanook of the North: A Story Of Life and Love In the Actual Arctic, a collaborative piece written for voice, violin, percussion, and soundscape to accompany the 1922 Silent Film by Robert J. Flaherty. The soundscape consists of sounds I collected in the Arctic, as well as many synthesized sounds and virtual instruments. Tanya Tagaq’s voice has been highlighted as an integral component to the sonic geography of the work. My artistic goal has been to create a highly captivating and interesting sonic vocabulary that captures the spirit of the time and place depicted in Nanook, while putting contemporary spin on it. —Derek Charke Tanya Tagaq commissioned by the Toronto International Film Festival. 4Rust (Excerpt, 2011) Composed by Jean-François Laporte and Benjamin Thigpen. Performed by Jean-François Laporte, Tu-Yos, new invented instruments; and Benjamin Thigpen, computer, Max/MSP patch. RUST is the name of the duo formed by Jean-François Laporte and Benjamin Thigpen. Their concert performances unite Laporte’s invented acoustic instruments and Thigpen’s electronics. From this encounter is born a dense, organic music of great intensity with noise at the heart of the musical discourse. 5Le Sang de la Terre (Excerpt, 2003) Composed and performed by Jean-François Laporte. Le Sang de la Terre is a musical piece for Laporte’s instrument the FlyingCan and real time processing. The FlyingCan is a slightly modified aluminum can that when spun through the air produces sound. By spinning the FlyingCan at the end of the rope the musician can create a melodic celestial song. In Le Sang de la Terre, the sound of the instrument is captured by four microphones and processed in real time by a Max/MSP patch. This track was made by putting the slice of an one-hundred and twenty-year old ash tree onto the modified record player utilized in the installation Years. Performed by Ensemble Kore: Michael Oesterle, Marc Couroux, and Justin Mariner directors; Marie-Annick Béliveau, mezzo soprano; Geneviève Déraspe, flute; Xavier Brossard-Ménard, clarinet; Jonathan Barriault, guitar; John Corban, violin; Pemi Paull, viola; and Yegor Dyachkov, cello. Bel Canto is a love song to the singing style known as bel canto, and to its embodiment in Maria Callas.
