1Sama’i Farah (2009) Composed, performed, and recorded by John Kameel Farah on piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, electronics, and programming. I had always wanted to use Sama’i form used in Arabic and Turkish classical music as a ground for a series of compositions. The sampled Daff/Darabouka/Riqq percussion sounds out a Sama’i rhythm (10/8 divided 3+2+2+3), with the piano reiterating an ornamented variant of a Landini cadence, found in much Renaissance keyboard music. The tempo lends itself easily to Dubstep, which becomes the framework of the drum and bass programming. A Samai typically moves into a faster section in a different meter, this one sprinting into a contrapuntal section in 7/8 before reiterating the theme. 3Passage (2008) Composed, performed, and recorded by Ian Battenfield Headley. The sounds for this work were recorded on a cool November night in Boston. Wandering with my field recorder, I found an ugly side street where I discovered and recorded two whole and shattered beer bottles, a rusty chain-link fence, some septic-looking plastic bags, a solitary bulldozer shovel, and patches of discarded newspapers. I encourage the listener to not think of the sources for the work, but instead to allow their abstracted sounds to excite the imagination. © 2011 Ian Battenfield Headley 5:03

10I Conversed With You in a Dream II (2006) Audio available on CD only. Composed by Jocelyn Morlock Performed by Tiresias: Mark McGregor, flute; and Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa, piano. When we initially approached Morlock about writing a piece for flute and piano, we had mentioned the possibility of a companion piece for Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis. In keeping with the theme of antiquity, Morlock turned to the writings of the ancient poetess Sappho. The resulting four-movement work, I Conversed With You in a Dream, mirrors the miniature nature of Sappho’s surviving works; each movement is a short yet vividly evocative aural rendering of a Sapphic fragment. Morlock even revisits the text fragment “I conversed with you in a dream” twice, first as a fleeting piano solo, and the second time as a duo, but exploring a soundscape far beyond the conventional. Produced by Mark Takeshi McGregor and Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa. Recorded at the Music & Sound Program, The Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff, Alberta. Released on the CD Tiresias—Delicate Fires: Canadian music for flute and piano by Redshift Music. © 2006 Jocelyn Morlock -
11Involuntary Love Songs (Song 2—Matches, 2008) Audio available on CD only. Composed by Jocelyn Morlock. Text by Alan Ashton. Performed by Geoffrey Sirett, baritone and Stephen Ralls, piano. “Matches” is the second of my Involuntary Love Songs and uses imagery of fire to portray a person who is in a wild and desperate state. The tighter and tighter circles that the protagonist is running in suggest a sort of imploding introversion, where incredible energy, fear and denial have nowhere to go. The music here is also very energetic—the vocal part is full of short, almost breathless phrases. The piano part is very dense with chords; indeed, the piano threatens to overwhelm the singer at times. Released on the CD Vagabond by Geoffrey Sirett, <www.geoffreysirett.com>. © 2008 Jocelyn Morlock -
