2Peripheral Conversations (Excerpt, 2012) Composed by Mark Peter Wright. Peripheral Conversations is a sequence of recordings made along three points of the perimeter edge of Sahaviriya Steelworks in South Gare, U.K. Documenting key stages of the steelmaking process (molten iron transportation and preparing coal for coking), the recordings also illustrate the complex acoustic interaction of various bird species including Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), and Skylark (Alauda arvensis). The work forms part of a long-term body of research investigating the auditory landscape of South Gare, a Designated Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cleveland, U.K. Supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and CRiSAP, London. —Mark Peter Wright Recorded on location at South Gare, Cleveland, U.K. by Mark Peter Wright. 3La forma dello spazio (2010) Composed by Zosha Di Castri. Performed by Henk Guittart, conductor; Adrian Failla, flute; Tzuying Huang, clarinet; Claudia Schaer, violin; Gabrielle Hamann-Guénette, cello; and Hiroaki Takenouchi, piano. This piece was inspired by the incredible mobile sculptures of Lee Bontecou and Alexander Calder. I wanted to create a composition in which musical gestures appear to be fairly static, yet are permitted a certain flexibility to move freely within a given space. Alluding to the idea of mobiles, La forma dello spazio has the musicians situated around the hall in a specific configuration. The piece begins with a solo by the violin, while the other instruments provide resonance, holding certain notes in unison, and echoing passages. Gradually the fragments accumulate and are set into orbit around the concert hall. The trajectories are at times fast, bouncing back and forth between performers across the void that separates them, at times slowly revolving around the audience. The title is borrowed from a short story by Italo Calvino, and translates appropriately to “The Form of Space.” —Zosha Di Castri Recorded live at the Banff Centre on July 2, 2010, by Florian Krentz (engineer), and Nolan Bouvier (assistant). © 2010 Zosha Di Castri 7:29
