3Liaisons mécaniques (2006–07) Composed by Nicolas Bernier. Krrrchstchack. The event is triggered by a profound attachment to physical matter and nostalgia of an era I did not live through: the era of machines—real ones—set in motion by physical mechanisms. I proceeded to gather pieces of machines and gears. My collection held reminiscent objects: cameras, 8-mm projectors, music boxes, and antique toys. I discovered naturally rich materials made of different granular textures and an abundance of micro-articulations. The gears are expressive and precise; they engage a defined process. I sampled the small objects before deconstructing them, splitting them, and dividing them up. From these fragments, I constructed new gears. I wanted to maintain, as much as possible, the essence of the physical characteristics of the sounds. The only thing left to do was to activate the musical mechanics. In this context, the gears are release mechanisms. They engage a change in space, a material transformation, a stop, a change of direction or simply another mechanism. They play a double role: sound material and transition between events, just as the ties and slurs of musical writing. Realized December 2006 to April 2007 in the studios of the University of Montreal (Quebec) and Musiques & Recherches (Belgium) and premiered on April 27, 2007 at Petit théâtre Mercelis in Brussels (Belgium). The piece was commissioned by Musiques & Recherches with the support of the Conseil des arts des lettres du Québec and the Agence Québec-Wallonie-Bruxelles. Thanks to Robert Normandeau and Annette Vande Gorne. The work was awarded the 2nd prize (ex æquo) at CIMESP 2007 (Brazil) and mentions at Concurso Internacional de Composição Electroacústica Música Viva 2007 (Portugal), Digital Art Awards (Japan, 2007), and 34th Bourges International Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art Competition (France, 2007). —Nicolas Bernier From the album Travaux mécaniques (empreintes DIGITALes, IMED 12114). 5A Particle in the Vastness of Space (2012) Audio available on CD only. Composed by Erdem Helvacioglu and Ulrich Mertin. Performed by: Erdem Helvacioglu, togaman, guitarviol, electric guitar, drum programming, and electronics; and Ulrich Mertin, viola, 5-string electric violin, and vocals. Previously released on Planet X by Innova Recordings (Innova-798, <www.innova.mu>). Without warning, a new object—Planet X—appeared in the heavens: a mysterious entity intruding upon a vast ancient system. Hailed as a paradise by some, an expeditionary force discovers instead that it represents a menace to human existence. Hunted by a superior alien intelligence an explorer is trapped and used as a test for the ultimate assimilation and extermination of humanity. This is the tale of his doomed fight, grasping for the last snatches of his soul. Produced and edited by Erdem Helvacioglu and Ulrich Mertin. Recorded and mixed by Erdem Helvacioglu at HELVACIOGLU Studio, Istanbul. Mastered by Pieter Snapper, Babajim Istanbul Studios and mastering. © 2012 Erdem Helvacioglu and Ulrich Mertin. 5:08
6Buried Gesture (2012) Composed by Bennett Jenisch. Buried Gesture is an acousmatic piece that was composed under the guidance of my composition professor Mike Frengel in Boston, MA. All sound sources stem from field recordings I took that then were processed to various degrees both on my personal laptop and at the tech lab at Northeastern University. The piece explores the contrast between the sounds of human gestures and those of our primordial mother earth. The tension and rhythm that human gestures carry are what gives this piece forward momentum, and the release of this same tension always brings the listener back to earth. —Bennett Jenisch © 2012 Bennett Jenisch. 8:32
7Resonate: ZKM Museum Mix (2012) Composed by Peter Kiefer. A live recording of the interactive light and sound installation Resonate at the ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art. The sound component of the installation uses two layers of audio—the drone layer, a tightly-knit sonic weave that moves through the space as an eight-channel sound projection; and sound objects, sound samples of traditional instruments and sounds, recorded in and around the exhibition space, that have been grouped and assigned to individual speakers within each of seven specific string structures. In this iteration of the installation at the ZKM Museum, the source sounds were adapted to the delicate space of the museum. The drone, which defines the room—even when there is no one playing the elastic strings—was distributed in a six-channel sound projection. The seven string structures were equipped with two speakers one at the bottom and one hanging at the ceiling, so there is movement of the sounds vertically up and down. Recorded live by Nathalia Grotenhuis in Karlsruhe, November 2012. © 2012 Peter Kiefer. 5:38
8Resonate: Boat Mix (2012) Composed by Kaspar König. A live recording of the interactive light and sound installation Resonate installed in a container boat in Frankfurt, Germany. (See track 7 for description of the installation.) The sound reflections in the metal hull of the ship amplify the resonances of the constantly changing sound composition. This also symbolically integrates the effect of water on the steel hull. The interaction of interior and exterior defines the boat in its entirety as a resounding body and a resonant system.
