1Before Frozen Fog (2008) Composed for Terri Hron by Peter V. Swendsen. Performed by Terri Hron (recorder). Recorded by Daniel Porter at Telus Studio, The Banff Centre, December 4, 2008. Before Frozen Fog grew out of discussions the composer and I had about the nature of the recorder’s sound and my improvising style. The piece allows me to modulate the order and length of its events during every performance, since the electronic part responds to my playing, influencing and influenced by my choices. © 2008 Peter Swendsen 6:52

8Derrière Son Double (Excerpt, 2001) Audio available on CD only. Composed by Miguel Azguime. Performed by Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble: Pedro Amaral (conductor). Derrière Son Double for small ensemble and live-electronics was commissioned by Casa da Música. The construct of this piece centers on the idea of acoustic modeling: instrumental or electronic. In some sections of the work the acoustic instruments serve as the model for creating the electronic part, and in other sections it is the electronic concepts and synthesis algorithms that serve as models for the instrumental writing—one doubling the other. 10Sunflower Sutra (Excerpt, 1999) Composed by Jerome Kitzke. Text by Allen Ginsberg and Jerome Kitzke. Performed by Gregory Oh. Kitzke wrote Sunflower Sutra during the final stage of his sister’s life; working Sunflower Sutra became a coping mechanism. The main text, by Allen Ginsberg, describes time spent among rusting hulks of locomotives and other mechanical effluent of industry, where they find, amidst the condoms and pots, a grey sunflower. This modern epistle affirms that “there lies, even at the bottom of life’s dankest and tragically sad moments, a seed of beauty, capable at any moment of bursting into a recognition of wonder.” This excerpt is taken from the middle of the work. At the beginning of the piece, we hear a train happily arriving, and at the end, sadly departing, representing the life of Kitzke’s sister. Recorded live by Peter Olsen in Walter Hall, University of Toronto, 2007. 13:01
