The Electronic Music Contest
Compose a piece in one of the following genres: Acousmatic, Audio art, Electroacoustic, Glitch, Intelligent dance music, Microsound, Noise, Turntable art, or Video music. No maximum length.
The Sonic Geography Writing Contest
Write prose to describe how sound influences place.
How does sound define the chosen location? Listen to your local coffee shop, grocery store, or commute to work. Choose anywhere—urban or rural, indoors or outside, busy and loud or mysteriously quiet—and literally describe what you hear. Write about language, geography, landscape, urbanization, culture, architecture or people. Maximum: 500 words.
Deadline for both contests: May 21, 2012, midnight EST
Eligibility Criteria
1. The competition is open to all ages and nationalities.
2. Works submitted must be original.
3. Works submitted cannot have been previously published or commercially released.
4. Length: Sonic Geography entries must not be longer than 500 words.
5. $20 contest entry fee for each first entry. Prices in Canadian dollars, taxes included. Special price for each additional entry: $5 each.
Contest Entry Fee includes 1-year subscription: 3 magazines, 3 CDs
Assessment Criteria
Excellence and originality of the submissions will be the main criteria in judging.
Submitted works will be examined by a jury invited by Musicworks magazine.
Application Process
Candidates may enter both categories with unlimited entries in each category.
Fill out the entrance form below and pay entrance fee.
Note: candidates may pay the entrance fee and submit their entries at different times, as long as both the entrance fee and the entry are received before the deadline.
File Types
Electronic Music Contest entries must be:
• MP3 or MP4 only (no other file type will be accepted).
• File names must follow this format: <applicant name_piece title>.
• Note: finalists will be contacted to resubmit their piece in either AIFF or WAV format data files (stereo, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit).
Sonic Geography Contest entries must be:
• PDF only (no other file type will be accepted).
• File names must follow this format: <applicant name_piece title_wordcount>.
Submitting Entries
Entries and a 100-word biography can be e-mailed to: musicworkscontest@gmail.com or
submitted by post.

The Fine Print
Publication and reproduction rights for non-winning entries are retained by the entrants.
Winners grant to Musicworks the exclusive right, for one year following the prize announcement, license, and privilege, under copyright to publish, distribute, reproduce, exhibit, publicize, use, and exploit all rights in and to the Piece in Musicworks magazine (including any digital versions thereof) and in all media. These rights become non-exclusive after one year following the prize announcement, in perpetuity.
Musicworks contests are open to all entrants, except Musicworks staff and their families, contract employees, and board members.
