Educational outreach is a vital part of our mandate. We are passionate about attracting new audiences to experimental music—audiences that go on to explore and appreciate new adventures in sound. Acting on our commitment to arts education, Musicworks spearheads a unique outreach program: Musicworks In The Classroom.
Launched in 2009, Musicworks In The Classroom brings free sets of Musicworks magazines into postsecondary classrooms across Canada. This outreach program is supported by donations, fundraising, and the SOCAN Foundation.
With over 80% Canadian artists featured in the magazine, and over 80% Canadian contributor content, this project publicizes Canadian experimental music, while helping to build the next generation of audiences and creators. Musicworks magazine shares success stories that inspire young Canadian composers and performers. The Musicworks in the Classroom program helps place these magazines in the hands of this next generation—3,000 students per year—so they can become more fully engaged and inspired by the work within contemporary music communities.
Participating schools over the last 9 years—including Memorial, Mount Allison University, Dalhousie, Laurier, Carlton, Queen’s, University of Toronto, UBC, Brandon, OCAD, York, Windsor, University of Calgary, University of Guelph and the Glenn Gould School—have benefited tremendously from this program.
"The Musicworks in the Classroom program is an indispensable resource for smaller music schools in remote locations to stay in touch with the music scene in larger centres. Musicworks provides information, opportunities, and inspiration to young students who are just beginning their careers in music. For courses such as Twentieth-Century music history, the Musicworks publications help to enhance the curriculum and provide students with up-to-date, relevant information. Particularly for schools like ours, far from major centres, Musicworks is a lifeline to the heart of the music scene in Canada."
