Gayle Young designed and built two microtonal instruments which were first
played in a concert of new pieces by Young in 1978. Since then she has
presented many concerts, and written compositions for other instruments.
Young has worked in sound installation, both as artist and curator and has a
broad interest in the role of sound in contexts ranging from concert music
to interdisciplinary collaboration. She has worked in electronic and
computer music, and wrote The Sackbut Blues, a biography Hugh Le Caine,
pioneer inventor of electronic music instruments. In 1999 she released a CD
of compositions and demonstrations found among Le Cainešs papers. (visit
